Crickets and gastrodiplomacy: The future of space food
As we look to build a more sustainable human presence in space, we will need to find new and innovative ways to feed our travelers. This week, we hear from Team Insecta, a group of Canadian students exploring crickets as a viable source of space food. Newton Campell Jr., a member of The Planetary Society's board of directors and co-founder of Heritage Space Food, discusses gastrodiplomacy and the importance of representation in space food. Then we close out with What's Up with Bruce Betts and a look at one of The Planetary Society's STEP grant-winning projects studying the complexities of growing plants in space.

    I like the moon idea. We have a world of brains and AI here to make it happen. There must be so much bubble gum duct tape and twine that NASA won't keep it going. The PARTS alone would be wonderful. It must be cheaper and safer.

    One should remember that at the begining asteroids were also called planets when they were discovered in 19th centuary. The current definitions of objects in Solar (read it more general - in stellar) system is not compleate. The body evolutional history should also be taken into account. Main bodies of the Solar system make the main orbital plane, obviously, one close to the ecliptic plane defined by the planet Earth. However the small bodies do have diferent orbits with different incliations. The official 3rd point of IAU definition that planet has "cleared its orbit" is wrong. "Planet dominates its orbit" - it is correct. The definition of asteroid needs improvement, too. Without oficial definition, rocks smaller than ~1 m are considsred meteoroids rather than minor planets. The oficial definition does not exist. In tis case, from the smaler size, I propose to use the size definition 1 m to become oficial definition. Small debris, small rocks, dust etc. are not asteroids. Large debris can became a new asteroid itself. Generally for planets, their size (mass) itself does not matter. Note, Pluto size is ~70% of our Moon. Pluto is not big to dominate its orbit. Thus only big enough objects, like planets, can dominate their orbit. Big planets should be big enough in a stellar system that has ended its active formation phase. P.S. Pluto is not a big planet in any perspective.

    Could they not have just made a new classification of planet to include it? You have terrestrial planets, Jovian planets, just make one more category for Pluto and Sedna and voila Pluto gets its dignity back and we get media buzz on the 10th planet of the solar system

    I miss him terribly. Mr. Sagan, you will always hail in my life as the greatest Astronomer /Physicist to have ever lived. I am honored that you were here in my life time. Every time I hear "The Pale Blue Dot", I am brought to tears, because I have a comprehension of how important and special our little blue dot is. I so wish everyone could have such a realization. If so, then Humanity would finally breach the final hurtle of becoming ... human. Next to the Universe its self, you stood as my inspiration. May you be enjoying your afterlife, and enjoying the universe in unparalleled splendor.

    Keep going. This channel is inspiring. In the RUclips world , it will gather many folks who are perhaps finding loves of life later than earlier. Life keeps changing as do interests. I know I love knowing about the universe, but am not into physics that help us really understand how this universe works, but the end game is amazing as I can hang on to the coattails of those who have figured out the hows and whys of this world floating around like a piece of dust in a endless infinite space that we will never understand in it’s entirety. Wow. Ok. Word salad over. Keep going keep going you guys. It’s always a positive experience watching these videos.

      Aren't the Trojan asteroids at the Lagrange points? They're still gravitationally coupled to the planet, just like moons and rings. Pluto is in the kuiper belt, it didn't clear its orbit of noncoupled bodies. Asteroids exist in the orbit of Pluto which don't orbit Pluto, and which aren't at the L points.

    • @Bashfluff
      @Bashfluff 11 часов назад

      The definition of planet isn’t based on fact either. This whole issue is nothing but semantics. Ultimately we defined planets based on an object’s perceived similarity to Earth, usually due to us not having the technology to dare how dissimilar they really are. We used to think moons were planets. We used to think asteroids were planets. We used to think Pluto was a planet. In every case, advances in technology allowed us to see that we were mistaken in classifying these objects as planets. I’m a little annoyed at this video because it acts like there’s a scientific debate, and there’s really not.

      I don't remember exactly but I think there's a little over 100 spheroids in the solar system. Whatever that number is, that's how many planets there are.

    • @Alexander-vl1lg
      @Alexander-vl1lg 35 минут назад

      There's a little over 100 but quite a few of them are moons including our own moon. And I'm not calling our moon a planet. You could make another stipulation that it can't orbit another planet.
